Blind Field

2014
Portsmouth
This series explores the city as a fragmented field of visibility in which concealment becomes as significant as revelation. Influenced by the photographic concept of the blind field, the space beyond the edge of any image, the work inverts that idea by obscuring portions of the frame itself rather than acknowledging what lies outside it. Areas of blackness isolate figures within sharply illuminated spaces, producing theatrical scenes of urban tension. What remains unseen is held suspended within the image, shaping the atmosphere of the visible world around it.

Photographed across the streets and public spaces of Portsmouth, high-contrast black-and-white processing intensifies dramatic natural light and shadow. Selective masking and tonal reduction simplify scenes into stark geometries, silhouettes and isolated figures. Through concealment as much as depiction, these images ask how visibility, spatial perception and human presence take shape within the urban landscape, and what it means when so much of what we perceive remains out of sight.
