Reading Rooms

2018
Krasne, Ukraine
In these abandoned interiors, the structures of Soviet education persist in silence. The scattered objects and gradual decay appear chaotic, yet with sustained attention a fragile order begins to return. Subjects through their instruments, lessons through their remnants, absent inhabitants through the traces left behind. The rooms become legible slowly, in their own time.

Photographed in a remote village in the Ukrainian–Belarusian borderlands of Polissya, abandoned after the Chornobyl disaster and largely untouched since, the series reveals quiet forms of cultural endurance. Despite broader Soviet policies of Russification, fragments of Ukrainian language and local identity survived beyond official scrutiny, preserved in textbooks, handwritten notes and classroom displays. Memory, political language and material absence continue to coexist here, suspended between suppression, evacuation and return.
