Second Nature
2015
Pernik, Bulgaria
On the industrial outskirts of Pernik, landscapes shaped by extraction and heavy industry slowly give way to new forms of growth. Vegetation pushes through fractured concrete and beneath rusted pipelines, while abandoned structures persist in an environment held between reclamation and continued dereliction. Selective colour processing draws out the latent hues of oxidised metal, mineral staining, foliage and dust, producing atmospheres that feel subtly contaminated and dreamlike.
Long associated with coal mining, pollution and the nearby Republika Power Plant, Pernik bears the material traces of processes that continue to shape the landscape after production has receded. Cyan-green skies and heightened surface colours suggest an ecology altered by industry rather than restored from it, a terrain in which contamination, adaptation and renewal become inseparable, and where the boundary between the artificial and the organic has begun to dissolve.
