NEWPORT GUILDHALL

Newport, Isle of Wight
2021
Community
Built between 1816 and 1819 to the designs of John Nash, the Grade II* listed Newport Guildhall is a prominent neoclassical civic landmark which historically accommodated a council chamber, fire station and magistrates court, retaining significant cultural and community value.

Structural decay, outdated facilities, poor accessibility and fragmented internal arrangements now limit the building’s effectiveness as a contemporary public institution and reduce public engagement across museum, archive and library functions.

The proposal adopts a minimal intervention approach, restoring the original structure while improving circulation, accessibility and spatial clarity. A contemporary extension accommodates modern requirements, while the reinstated High Street entrance strengthens the Guildhall’s civic presence and connection to the town.

Material presented here reflects independently developed design work undertaken in association with ermc Ltd.
