MATAPAN APARTMENTS

Southsea, Hampshire
2017
Interior architecture
Constructed in the 1940s as part of the Fraser gunnery range, this mid-century administration block formed part of Portsmouth’s naval training infrastructure. Its austere brickwork and rigid form reflect a utilitarian Cold War legacy, now derelict but still structurally legible.

The building is constrained by poor access, deep floorplates, and limited daylight, with internal rigidity and public perception limiting reuse potential. Challenges arise in exploiting the generous volumes without compromising proportionality.

The proposal introduces mezzanine levels to utilise existing height, creating open-plan living spaces organised around the structural grid. Subdivisions align with existing window positions, while minimal intervention and exposed structure retain the building’s utilitarian character within a contemporary residential conversion.

Material presented here reflects independently developed design work undertaken in association with ermc Ltd.
